How to encourage your child to develop Early Reading Skills
Many ways on how to develop literacy among children should be based upon prior knowledge and language experiences that the child had at home. Pictures, play, educational toys and the printed word combine with oral language help your child understand the symbolic representation that inspires reading and writing. Parents and grandparents could help kids and grandchildren to begin reading at early age of preschool.
Reading along with your kids: Pretend you are your children school teacher, and then get some quality time to be with your kids to read along with them. By reading along with your kids will improve your children listening skill as well as their pronunciations. This activity will be more fun when you invite a small group of children; that include kids’ neighbors, nieces and nephews and your children friends to join your kids, just like storytelling. Many parents prefer to choose the books from Dr Seuss for example “The Cat in the Hat” to be their favorite kids book because it has simple and short sentences, colorful illustration and a bigger font. While reading the book, you could ask questions about the story so that the children would make predictions about what will happen next. This kind of approach also help to build self esteem in your child to actively participate in the story, hence to acquire social skills with multiple kids that would be future success in reading.
Nursery rhymes: Nursery rhymes, songs, and poetry are key parts of children literacy development. Listening to, and repeating; nursery rhymes is a wonderful way for children to learn phonics. An effective method to associate letters with the speech sounds they represent, rather than learning to recognize the whole word as a unit. Children and preschoolers first learn that speech is made up of sounds, syllables, and words indirectly from listening to stories, songs, nursery rhymes, poetry, and conversations.
By printed words and pictures: To understand how printed words and pictures work; buy your kids musical books and activity books for kids. Flash Cards games and board games are entertaining ways to promote your children memory skills and to enrich their vocabularies. Alphabet books and game puzzles encourage children to recognize words and letters. Also, writing and word spelling are advantageous techniques for children to express their imagination by dictation and thus, later she or he shall learn to read. Electronic computer games could be an alternative tool to develop early reading skill. There are many educational software designed specifically for children to learn phonics and writing.
Educational Toys: Toys for young children promote learning and develop the imagination. Learning Toys such as whimsical puppets, plush toys, role-play activities, nurturing dolls, activity toys, baby DVD, scientific explorer and building construction blocks bring young minds to life. Preschool toys and toddler toys are designed to educate children to think all together integrate the living things with the toys they are playing.
With variety of techniques have been mentioned above, parents could try to combine two or more approach while giving your kids some space to learn and play with their favorite toys.
